Thistle Doo Farm is 3 acres of permaculture-informed farm, food forest and educational centre in the quiet of the Essex countryside but only 6 miles from the city of Colchester.
If you're looking for an outdoor, environmentally friendly venue for your event, Thistle Doo might be just the place for you. We have already held book launches, tree planting parties, and teacher training sessions. In March we will be hosting the first annual gathering of the East Anglia Permaculture Association.
Our facilities in some ways are abundant and in others, quite limited. We are blessed with three acres of space to explore and run around in. You and your guests can explore the food forest and orchards; sit around a roaring fire pit; and watch out for our residents: kestrels, barn owls, rabbits, deer and dozens of different British birds, depending on the time of year. We are totally off grid so all our electricity is generated by solar panels. Most of our water is harvested and filtered rainwater but we do also have mains water for the dry times.
We can provide your party with a beautifully moon-shaped area of grass and flowers facing our traditional, oak lath house. Year round this is a functional part part of our nursery and a home to our baby trees but it can also be festooned with lights, flowers and bunting as a stage and backdrop for your event.
Our Octagon is an eight sided shelter around a huge, raised fire pit. This is suitable for up to 30 children or 20 adults to gather around a fire, be sheltered from the rain and engage in whatever activities you think might be appropriate. Storytelling, healing, therapy, training.
There are two types of off grid toilets. Standing up and sitting down. Both are completely waterless and use straw and sawdust as a way to compost human waste into something we can use to safely and regeneratively fertilise our fruit trees and land.
By having your event at Thistle Doo you will close the nutrient loop on your own waste, safely knowing that you will not be polluting the water system of our beautiful world.
Electricity can be brought to you a portable battery pack which is sufficient for musical amplification and lighting. Drinking water and open-fire cooking facilities are also provided. If your event requires professional catering we can help you connect with our local partners. Whatever your event, we can help you make sure that that it doesn’t negatively impact the environment. By hiring Thistle Doo you are also helping to regenerate depleted farmland, create healthy soil and produce nutrient-dense food for local people.
